Abstract
Summary
Problem statement: Blood transfusion is a lifesaving procedure with particular significance in
the emergency department for the resuscitation of the critically ill and bleeding patient. In our
country there is lack of hospital specific transfusion guideline and also the lack of assessment of
the practice of blood transfusion in terms of demographics and common risk factors that require
transfusion.
Objectives: The objective of this study is to assess the practice of transfusion of blood products
in the emergency department of AaBET hospital and St. Paul's hospital Millennium Medical
College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Methods: This research will use cross-sectional observational method to access all patients
transfused in the ED of the above stated hospitals by using a structured questionnaire to be filled
by attending physician. And the results will be analysed by using statistical analysis.
