Abstract
Abstract
Background:
Neurogenic bladder is bladder and/or urinary sphincter malfunctioning that result from some
change in the central nervous system (CNS) and/or peripheral nervous system. Early diagnosis
and proper management of neurogenic bladder in children are crucial to minimize complications
and improve outcomes. But if not, it can lead to significant morbidity and mortality.
Pediatrics residents and general pediatrician play a crucial role in the Diagnosis and management
of neurogenic bladder. However, there is no online published research data about the knowledge
and practice of pediatrics residents in Ethiopia as well as other areas regarding the diagnosis and
management of neurogenic bladder in pediatrics.
Objective: To assess the knowledge and practice of pediatrics residents in management of
neurologic bladder in pediatrics in three selected teaching hospitals Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Methodology: Institutional based descriptive cross sectional study was done with facility based
self-administered question among pediatrics resident with sample size of 125. The data was
entered and analyzed by using SPSS version 25.To identify the factors logistic regression was
carried out. Those variables with p-value < 0.25 were selected as candidate variables for
multivariate logistic regression analysis and variables with p-value <0.05 were considered as
statistically significant. The strength of association was measured using odds ratio at 95%
confidence interval. Data was presented using Tables, Figures and texts.
Results: In this study, one hundred forty (140) respondents participated in the study making
response rate of 83.3%. The magnitude of good knowledge and practice was 56% (95% CI:
83.27%, 75.33%) and 56.8% (95% CI: 64.31%, 54.69%) respectively
Conclusion: In this study, the magnitude of knowledge and practice of pediatrics residents on
the management of NGB in children were 70(56%) and 71(56.8%) good respectively. It also
shows, among the predictor variables, years of residency had significant association with the
level of knowledge and practice pediatrics residents on the management of NGB in children.
Recommendation:- Based on this study we were recommended: To encourage collaboration among healthcare
institutions, pediatric experts, and researchers to develop national guidelines or protocols for the
management of neurogenic bladder in children. To conduct further researches to assess the long
term impact of education and training programs on the knowledge and practice of pediatric
residents in the management of neurogenic bladder in children.
