Executive summary
This body of works contains my outputs that were completed during the last two and half year
residency time. This works included major outputs such as Outbreak investigation, Surveillance data
analysis, surveillance system evaluation, Health profiles description, research project and other outputs
expected from laboratory track like Narrative summary of laboratory report, Quality manual for
selected health facility laboratory, Standard Operating procedure for selected health facility laboratory.
Additionally it contains scientific manuscripts for peer revived journal and abstracts for scientific
conferences.
Outbreak of rotavirus was happened among under-five children who live in Dano woreda, West shewa
zone Oromia regional state from January 5 to February 10, 2017. On this outbreak 919 under-five
children were affected with rotavirus that was associated with age of the children, vaccination status,
and drinking water.
Surveillance data of East Shewa zone was analyzed for data of suspected meningitis cases. Health
Management and Information System (HMIS) four data (2004-2007 EFY) was analyzed to
characterize the cases by time, place and Person. In the four year period 882 cases were recorded with
annual incidence rate of 15.6 cases per 100,000 people.
The surveillance system evaluation system was conducted in Ada‘a woreda, East shewa zone Oromia
regional state on two twenty two priority diseases, maternal death and epidemic typhus. The
evaluation identified that there were discrepancy of reporting facilities between woreda health office
and health centers. There were no national guide line, shortage of reporting formats and no cases
definitions of evaluated top priority diseases.
Health profile was done for Mojo town administration, east shewa zone Oromia regional state. The
assessment found that 100% health coverage, poor toilet coverage of the town, high prevalence and
incidence of HIV that related to high population traffic in the town.
Regarding to laboratory quality manual and standard operating procedures, quality manual was
prepared for Batu Hospital which did not have quality manual previously. Two Standard Opening
procedure, for VIKIA Rapid Tests and Wantai Rapid Test for detection of HIV 1& HIV2 antibodies
were prepared to Adama regional laboratory. Narrative summary was prepared for my residency place
Adama regional laboratory.
My research project was concentrated on malaria, especially on performance of laboratory
professionals of Afar Region who diagnose malaria microscopically. Off 119 laboratory professionals
in the region in 2017, 83% of them participated on the research. The findings of this research indicated
that the performance of laboratory professionals working in Afar region was poor which associated
with malaria microscopy training, year of experience and their theoretical knowledge.
Other requirements of field epidemiology residents, abstract and manuscript were also prepared for
scientific conferences and peer reviewed journals. Abstract of rotavirus outbreak investigation and
suspected meningitis case were sent to scientific conferences and abstract of rotavirus outbreak
investigation was presented on the first Ethiopian Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training
program scientific conference. The manuscript of rotavirus outbreak investigation surveillance data
analysis of suspected meningitis also sent to international journals.
