Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background:It has been 4 decades since Human Immune deficiency Virus (HIV) has become
a global issue of public health importance; a lot has changed about the disease since then. The
occurrence of renal impairment in HIV infected individuals shown to be associated with both
increased morbidity and mortality of the infected individuals. Due to which, finding the common
causes of renal impairment in HIV infected individuals has paramount importance.
Objective: The study aims to assess impaired renal function and associated factors among HIV
infected individuals in ART clinic at Zewuditu memorial hospital(ZMH) and St. Paul’s
millennium medical college(SPHMMC), from April to August 2021.
Methodology: A cross sectional study wasconducted to assess the association of impaired
renal function and different factors among HIV infected individuals. Data was collected from
medical chart of the patients in anti-retroviral therapy (ART) clinic of respective hospitals. Data
collection took 2 months, July 01 2021 to August 30, 2021, among patients who were on follow
up at SPHMMC and ZMH ART clinic. Descriptive and analytic data analysis were done. Data
was collected using checklist, entered in EpiData version 3.01, and analyzed using SPSS version
20. Texts, tables and figures were used to present the results. Variables with a p-value of <0.25
on bivariate analysis were taken to Multivariable logistic regression to see the statistical
significance and at <0.05 statistically significant was declared.
Result:The total number of samples were 405 all of them were included in the in the analysis.
The magnitude of the renal dysfunction revealed from this study was 8.4% (95% Confidence
Interval: 5.51 to 11.4). Multivariable logistic regression shows that being female (Adjusted Odds
Ratio = 4.5; 95%CI: 1.94, 10.36), Baseline CD4 count less than 200, (AOR = 3.4; 95% CI:1.34,
8.70), history of opportunistic infection, (AOR = 2.7; 95% CI: 1.02, 7.39), were significantly
associated with the impaired renal function.
Conclusion: The prevalence of impaired renal function was low when compared to other studies
done in Ethiopia. Being female, lower CD4 count and having history of opportunistic infection
were associated with impaired renal function. Health institutions involvement in early detection
and prevention of opportunistic infection among patient with HIV prevent renal function
impairment.
