Abstract

EXECUTIVE SUMMERY This document contains a two years Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program outputs which is equivalent with thesis to be submitted to SPHMMC department of public health for partial fulfillment of master degree in Field Epidemiology. In addition to the outputs it also contains a thesis conducted for partial fulfillment of master of degree in Field Epidemiology. It includes reports of diseases outbreak investigations, public health surveillance data analysis, surveillance system evaluation, Health Profile Description, manuscripts, abstracts, Surveillance weekly Epidemiologic bulletin and public health research report (thesis). Accordingly the document is organized to eight chapters. Chapter one contains diseases outbreak investigations. It is the only outbreak investigation with title of "Acute Watery Diarrhea outbreak investigations in woreda 8-13 districts of Yeka sub city" that I have conducted during my residency. The outbreak investigation was conducted using case control study design and it contains abstract, introduction, methods, discussions, conclusion, recommendations, acknowledgement and references separately. Chapter two contains report of surveillance data analysis which was conducted on measles infection in Yeka sub city, Addis Ababa. In this data analysis five years surveillance data of measles (2010 to 2014) in Yeka sub city were used. Description and distribution of measles infection in the sub city with respect to place and person was performed. Incidence rate, trends and seasonality of measles infection were also determined. This report also contains abstract, introduction, methods, discussions, conclusion, recommendations, acknowledgement and references separately. Similarly chapter three addresses surveillance system evaluation entitled “An Evaluation of typhoid fever surveillance system in Yeka Sub city". This chapter clearly presents the purpose and objectives of typhoid fever surveillance and its progress towards its objectives. Core and supportive activities of typhoid fever surveillance system in respect to case detection, registration, confirmation, reporting, epidemic preparedness & response, supervision, staff training, feedback and financial support were also described. The surveillance attributes: simplicity, flexibility, stability, acceptability, representativeness, timeliness and data quality were also assessed in the chapter. Chapter four contains assessment of Yeka sub city health profile. In the chapter health and health related data of the sub city were evidently presented. Data generated from health profile has very crucial role in priority setting, resource allocation, identifying gap of health event and future planning. Prioritizing prominent health and health related problems of the community at any level is very vital for basic planning and appropriate public health interventions. Stake holders of health and health related issues will access evidence based information from this chapter. Chapter five contains Scientific Manuscripts for Peer reviewed Journals. In his chapter, two manuscripts were presented. One of the manuscripts was prepared according to Indian Journal of public health. The manuscript having title of Yeka sub city measles surveillance data analysis’s from 2010-2014, were prepared and sent to Indian Journal of public health for publication it is on the process to be published. The second manuscript were having title of acute watery diarrhea outbreak investigation in woreda 8-13 districts of Yeka sub city were prepared according to Ethiopian journal of health development author’s guideline. The abstract entitled “Yeka sub city measles surveillance data analysis’s from 2010-2014 were prepared and sent to 67 annual EIS conference TEPHINET, Organized by CDC FETP International Night 2018. But this abstract was not accepted to be presented on the conference. Chapter seven includes Public Health Emergency weekly bulletins. Of many weekly bulletins that I have prepared during the field base attachment, I had included only two of them in this document. The weekly bulletins were communicated to different stakeholders through Yeka sub city public health emergency management offices. Finally public health research (thesis) was described in chapter eight.
