Abstract
Summary
Despite of many intervention activities undertaking recurrent and emerging public health
diseases are remain a public health problem globally especially in developing countries. The
Ethiopian government policy is more emphasis on prevention measures of communicable and
non-communicable diseases. Ethiopian Field Epidemiology Training Program that adapted from
the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence
Service (EIS) is one of the programs focusing on capacity building public health practitioners.
The training enables trainers to conduct disease surveillance and implement prevention and
control measures of prioritized diseases.
This compiled body of works contains many outputs which all of them were done during the
residency time of the program. I stayed from October 2016 to March 2018 in St. Paul’s Hospital
Millennium Medical College, Department of Public Health- Field Epidemiology Training
Program and at Amhara Public Health Institution, Bahir Dar Field Base. During my stay; I
carried out one outbreak investigation; one surveillance data analysis; one surveillance system
evaluation; one Woreda health profile description; three Standard Operating Procedures and one
Lab Manual.
Chapter I: One outbreak investigations were conducted which is measles outbreak investigation
in Merhabete woreda, North shewa, Ethiopia from April 25- May 23/2017. Descriptive and
analytic Epidemiology was used to describe magnitude of the diseases and identify risk factors
associated with diseases. Unmatched 1:2 case control study deign were employed and totally 150
individuals were included.
Chapter two:Four years (2012 to 2015) relapsing feversurveillance data was analyzed in North
Gondar zone, Amhara, Jan, 2016.A total 819,888 cases (clinical and confirmed Malaria cases) were
analyzed.
Chapter III: Evaluation of surveillance system was conducted at Dessie town, Amhara Region
and cross- sectional descriptive study design was employed from Feb 7 to Feb 21, 2017.
Chapter IV:- A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted to assess and describe the
current health profile of Dangilla woreda, Amhara, from May15-June 15, 2016.
The five and six chapter contains activities done in addition to the main out puts which are
mentioned as follows;
Chapter V: two Standard operating procedures for Injibara general Hospital Laboratory, this
includes:
1. Procedure for H.pylori rapid test
2. Procedure for Gram stain test
3. Procedure for Microhematocrit
Chapter VI: Laboratory quality manual for Injibara general Hospital Laboratory
Chapter VII: Determinants of Tuberculosis in HIV-infected adults taking antiretroviral therapy
(ART) among public Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, a Case–Control Study Was conducted
from October 23 to Nov 28, 2017. A total of 312 (104 cases and 208controls) were included in
the study.
Meanwhile, since the program’s philosophy is learning by doing, numerous activities were
carried out at the field base, which greatly contributed to strengthen the public health Laboratory
workforce capacity through training, performing daily activities, conducting disease surveillance
and emergency planning, preparedness and response activities
