Abstract
Proposal Summary
Introduction: Antenatal care is corner stone in obstetrics .The newly proposed Antenatal care
model recognizes that every pregnant woman is at risk for complications and four at least Antenatal
care visits are recommended for all pregnant women. Early starting Antenatal care during
pregnancy is key indicator to identify risk factors in pregnancy and to improve maternal and child
health but many pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa start antenatal care attendance late.
According to Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey 2016, Antenatal care coverage of
Ethiopia is 62% and only 11% pregnant women start antenatal care timely (before 16 weeks of
gestational ages). This implies that majority pregnant women are not using first Antenatal care
services. Although antenatal services is accessed with free fee in Addis Ababa, detailed study to
identify factors associated with timing of initiation of antenatal care has not been conducted.
Objective: To assess timing of initiation of first antenatal care visit and associated factors among
pregnant women attending antenatal care in Addis Ababa city administration public health center.
Methods: health facility based cross sectional study design will be conducted among pregnant
women in Addis Ababa. Among those 10 sub cities which found in Addis Ababa, three sub cities
will be selected randomly. From public health centers found in these sub cities, two health centers
will be selected based on their fourth quarter report of 2017. The quarter monthly average client
flow of the selected health centers will be taken from Maternal and child health department of
report of the selected health centers and this quarterly average client flow will be changed into
monthly average client and then 569 samples will be proportionally allocated for selected
facilities depending on their client flow. All pregnant women who attend to selected health centers
at the time of data collection will be included in the study. Data will be collected by trained diploma
nurse data collectors by interviewing. After questionnaire will be checked for completeness,
cleaned manually and entered in to EPI INFO version 7 and will be exported to Statistical Package
for Social Science version 21 for further analysis. Bivariate and multivariable analysis will be used
to identify associated factors for timing of first antenatal care visit.
Work plan and budget: The study period will be from July to December 2017 and data collection
will be October 10 to November 20 .The total allocated budget required for the project is 55,719.3
