Abstract
Abstract
Background: The use of high sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) test has led to early diagnosis and
management of ACS which lead to an invaluable armament to clinician. These values are extrapolated from the normal
healthy individuals applying upper level of the 99 percentile. Diagnosis, management and prognostication of
variety of cardiovascular disorders (CVD) specifically acute coronary syndromes (ACS) had been
one of breakthroughs in the field of cardiology. However, their use should be based on comparison
with normal range values obtained from the population, and it’s considered abnormal when the
value is more than the 99th percentile. To date, there are no such nomograms in Ethiopia. Hence,
this research was conducted to determine hs-cTn values and associated factors in healthy adults as
well prevalence of cardiovascular factors in apparently healthy adults.
Method: A prospective study was conducted to determine the 99th percentile level of high sensitive
cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) assay in healthy Addis Ababa population. A total of 210 apparently
healthy in the primary samples were included for screening out of which 120 were identified as
healthy. The general population 99th percentile hs-cTn I level was found to be 45.74 pg/ml, with
statstically significant difference between male and female groups (p=0.002) as well with incresing
age (p=0.012) with age group ≥65 having higher values..
Conclusion and Recommendation: The 99th percentile value of hs-cTn value of Addis Ababa
healthy population determined to be 45.74 pg/ml with 44.97 pg/ml & 31.93 pg/ml for male and
female respectively.
