dc.description.abstractABSTRACT Background Postoperative complications are frequent events, particularly among patients at high risk. These complications have both clinical effects during the immediate postoperative period and long-term effects on quality of life impairment and increased mortality.The complications that occur after surgery are challenging for physicians because they are sometimes unpredictable, have relatively sudden onset, and can develop quickly toward death Objectives To describe profile and outcomes of patients who develop postoperative complications in month of February to April 2018 SPHMMC Methodology A hospital based prospective cross sectional study design was used the study area is at SPHMMC. The study was conducted from February to April 2018.Data was analyzed using SPSS software. The analyzed data presented using charts, tables, and graphs and described using texts. Results A total of 60 patients develop post-operative complications .Majority patients were male 34(60 %).The most common mode of admission for those patients who develop post-operative complications is emergency 33(55%). The common pathology seen on those patients who develop post-operative morbidity and mortality is acute abdomen which accounts 27(45%) and followed by thyroid and biliary pathology. Among patients who develop post-operative complication 29 (48.3%) they develop surgical site infection. Pulmonary complication were detected in 16(26.7%) of patient. Fourteen (23.3%) patient develop serum potassium abnormality. Among the patients who develop post-operative complications 38(63.3%) of patients improved and 22(36.6%) of them died. CONCLUSION Majority of patients who develop post-operative complication are males. Surgical site infection and pulmonary complications are the common one. Emergency patients develop post-operative complication more than elective patients. KEY WORDS postoperative complication, pulmonary complication
