Abstract

Summary Introduction Pre-anesthesia machine check is an essential step in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of anesthesia administration. This assessment involves a detailed inspection of the anesthesia machine and its components to ensure that everything is functioning properly before the start of any surgical procedure. Problem of statement: Pre-anaesthesia checkout procedure (PAC) is a mandatory part of anaesthesia practice, failure to check the machine before use could be hazardous and may lead to patient death. Hence this study is aiming to assess the adequacy of pre-anaesthesia machine check at St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College. Objectives: To assess the adequacy of pre-anaesthesia machine check in St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College before elective surgery. Methods: Observational cross-sectional study on the assessment of adequacy of pre-anaesthesia machine check was conducted in St. Pauls hospital operation theatre from 1st July 2023 – 1st March 2024. The Data collected was analysed by SPSS, presented in tables and graphs, and finally the results of this study will be desseminated to the department of Anesthesiology and critical care. Estimated budget: The total budget for this study is estimated to be 28.000 ETB. Results: In this study the overall all compliance rate for preanesthesia machine check was 72.5%, out of which non of the checks observed was complete. Conclusion: This study concluded that the preanesthesia machine check was not adequate in reference to the standards.
