Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: Skeletal maturation, articulated as bone age; has been recognized as significant criterion for assessing growth and development.Wrist hand bones influence in age and gender determination.Radiographic methods are customarily used for bone age determination. For age determination purpose, hand-wrist radiographs taken from patients are commonly ideal techniques. Objective: To evaluate the pattern of skeletal maturity of hand and wrist bone among 8 to 19 years old children and adolescents with known chronological age using X-rays. The degree of appearance and/or fusion of epiphyseal centers of hand wrist bones at certain age is assessed and then compare the findings of present study with other similar studies. Methods: Community based,cross-sectional study design was conducted in schools found in Gullele sub city.convenience sampling method was used to select study participants until 150 study subjects are found.ordinal logistics regression test used to identify the association between age and skeletal maturity of the bone. p-value <0.05 is considered statistically significant. All the data analysis is done by using SPSS 26.0 version. Results: Complete fusion of the epiphyseal end of radius in 94.5% of cases is at the age of 18-19years old and complete fusion of eiphyseal end of ulna at 18-19years only in 83% of cases.complete fusion of the head of 2nd to 5th metacarpal bones is in 100% cases at age 16-17years.complete fusion of base of first metacarpal in 100% of cases 17-18years in males and 16-17 in females.pisiform appeared in female at the age of 9year and at 8year in males and 100% appearance of pisiform at 11 years in females and 14years in males. Conclusion and Recommendations: complete fusion of the distal end of radius and ulna is at the age of 18-19 years .complete fusion of head of first metacarpal is at the age of 16-17 years in females and 17 18years in males.complete fusion of head of 2nd to 5th metacarpals is 16-17 years.pisiform appears at the age of 8-9yeras in males and at 9-10 years in females it appears one year earlier in males.
