Abstract
Background- Congenital heart disease is a problem with structure of the heart that a child born
with. Mothers play a key role in caring for their sick children. Their experiences of care were
influenced by culture, rules, financial and the system of health and care services.
Objective- To assess burden of care among mothers of children with congenital heart disease
at Tertiary Hospitals, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Methods-A cross-sectional descriptive study is conducted through Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI),
taken from similar study and socio-demographic factors was used to assess the burden of care
among caregivers having children with CHD, starting at October 2023 to January 2024, care
givers whose child is a range of 0- 18 years are included.
Results- 51% of mothers have moderate to severe burden, using multinomial regression model, ,
the finding revealed that Women whose age >=30 years had 1.2 folds increase in its mild to
moderate burden than little or no burden. Those who have high income had 59% less likely of
mild to moderate burden compared to little burden. The study participant who were from rural
area were 3.5 folds increase the chance of mild to moderate burden than little or no burden.
Participants having higher education level were 47% less likely of developing severe burden.
Conclusion- CHD is associated with a significant caregivers’ disease burden. Care givers education
status, living at urban areas, and better income level were associated with less burden of care.
