ESSENTIAL NEWBORN CARE PRACTICE AND IT ASSOCIATED FACTORS AMONG POSTNATAL MOTHERS IN PUBLIC HOSPITAL ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA. 2024.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: Background: - Essential newborn care practices are compressive strategic and cost-effective intervention to promote newborn health. It involve thermal care, delayed bathing, recognizing danger signs, infection prevention, breastfeeding initiation, cord care, and overall well-being promotion. Objective: -This study was conducted to assess essential newborn care practice and associated factors among postnatal mothers at public hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 2024 G.C. Method: - This embedded mixed-methods study for quantitative and quantitative mothod. 394 postnatal mothers were enrolled in cross sectional study, of whom 8 were purposively selected for in depth interviews of qualitative study. The study was conducted from May 10, - Jun 10, 2024 Addis Ababa city, Ethiopia, at selected public hospitals. Data was cleaned, entered into Epi-data 4.6, and analyzed using SPSS version 28. Binary and multivariable logistic regression was identified significant variables (p <= 0.25 in bivariable analysis) for further analysis (p < 0.05 threshold). Data analysis was performed using a inductive thematic analysis approach. Finally, the results of qualitative and quantitative studies contributed to comprehensive understanding of parent’s essential newborn practice. Resuts: level of good essential newborn care practices was 43.1% (170 out of 394) with 95% confidence interval ranging from (38.2 to 48.0%).(AOR=2.16; 95%CI: 1.2, 3.894), Counslling on ENCP [(AOR=3.22; 95%CI: 1.84, 5.61), Mode of delivery (AOR=2.01; 95%CI: 1.13, 3.60), Immediate Postnatal Care visit (AOR=2.53; 95%CI: 1.37, 4.68), and mother's knowledge on newborn danger signs (AOR=3.48; 95%CI: 1.36, 4.17)] birth prepardness.
