Abstract

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND; Malnutrition is a critical yet underestimated factor in susceptibility to infection including Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and others which decrease productivity at the community level. Despite, the high burden of TB and under nutrition in Ethiopia, Assessment of nutritional status is often neglected in clinical practice and national TB program. The nutritional aspect is often not covered in infectious disease health program rather it inclined to non communicable disease. There is no sufficient research done on prevalence of under nutrition and associated factors among TB patients. Although there are different guidelines about nutrition and TB the implementation of these services is very weak. OBJECTIVE ; To assess prevalence of under nutrition among adult TB patients and associated factors in public health facilities of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2021. METHODS; An institutional based cross sectional study design was conducted in selected public health facilities of Addis Ababa. The total sample size of the study was 363. Data were collected by using a pretested structured questionnaire while, Anthropometric measurements such as height and weight were collected using stadiometer and Seca digital scale (Seca Germany). The data were coded and entered into computer using Epi data and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Binary logistic regression analysis was done to assess the association between outcome variable and independent explanatory variables. Odds ratio with 95% CI was estimated and multivariable logistic regression analysis was used. The level of statistical significance was declared at p-value less than 0.05. RESULTS; The prevalence of under nutrition among adult TB patients in public health facilities of Addis Ababa was 45.5%. Participants who were government employee (AOR= 0.37; 95%CI=0.15, 0.92) and Who had Family size of five and more than five (AOR= 3.54; 95%CI=1.15,10.9) were significantly associated with under nutrition. Participants who didn’t got Dietary counseling (AOR=0.49; 95%CI=0.27,0.92) and who had low Individual dietary diversity (AOR =3.24;95%CI =1.59,6.6) and medium Individual dietary diversity ( AOR=2.78; 95%CI = 1.16,6.65) were significantly associated with undernutrition. Conclusion and Recommendation; The prevalence of undernutrition among adult TB patients in public health facilities of Addis Ababa was high. Hence, Regular nutritional assessment and dietary counseling should be part of routine care of adult TB patients. KEYWORDS; Nutrition, under nutrition, Tuberculosis patients, Nutritional status, BMI
