Abstract
Background Burnout is a progressive loss of idealism, energy and purpose experienced by
people in the helping professions as a result of their conditions of work. Nurses are vulnerable to
develop burnout due to the emotional nature of their jobs, the nature of patient care and high
patients' demand so the level of burnout and associated factors in institutions like hospitals has to
be studied and need to have solid data on the issue for better work environment and service.
Objectives The study was aimed to assess the level of burnout and associated factors among
nurses working in SPHMMC.
Methodology Institution based cross sectional study was conducted and sample size was
determined. Participants were selected using simple random sampling and MBI structured self
administered questionnaire was used and data entered to SPSS version 21 for analysis.
Result From 110 participants 53(47.87%) experienced Burnout syndrome. Among the study
participants82(74.5%),22(20%),6(5.5%) had Emotional Exhaustion and Emotional
Depersonalization of nurses were 67 (60.9%), 32(29.1%),11(10%) high ,moderate and low
respectively. the scale of personal accomplishment were 80(72.7%),21(19.1%).9(8.2%) ,high ,moderate, low respectively.
Conclusion This study presented strong evidence that a significant proportion of nurses
experience Burn out (47.87%) suggesting the need for organizational interventions for human
resource reforms to mitigate the effect of burnout. As the study indicate nurses suffer from
professional burn out and in need of more attention so that nursing managers and authorities in
different levels should pay attention for making a friendly communication with the staffs, team
work encouragement, sharing the personnel in decision making, giving occupational supports,
reducing occupational conflicts.
