Abstract

ABSTRACT Background-: : Lower Back pain is one of the major prevalent health problems affecting people worldwide and the leading cause of morbidity and mortality that affects individuals working ability at the workplace and general health conditions. Pain or discomfort in the spinal region that is confined between the inferior gluteal folds and the 12th rib, with or without radiating to the lower extremities, is known as low back pain. Objective: To assess magnitude of low back pain and its associated factors among nurses working in the intensive care unit at selected public hospital Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 2024. Methods: The study was conducted in Addis Ababa Public Hospitals, Ethiopia, from April to May), 2024, and an institutional-based cross-sectional study design were used. The data were collected by using adapted Standardized musculoskeletal questionnaires for assessing the magnitude of lower back pain. Hospitals were selected using sample random sampling method. The sample size were determined using single population proportion formula with a sample size of 315 nurses. Data was imported into Epi data and exported to SPSS version 26.0 for analysis. A binary logistic regression model was used to fit each variable. Variables having p values <0.25 in the bi variable analysis were included in the final multivariable analysis. A p-value of less than 0.05 and a 95% confidence range was used to indicate significant associations. Results: With a 95.2% Response rate, 300 study participants participated in this investigation. The mean (SD ±) age of the study participants was 27.8(± 2.4 years. More than half of the study participants 167(55.7%) gender were male. Sex (AOR = 1.74(95%CI: 1.06, 2.87)), lift high loaded objects more than 20 kg on a daily basis (AOR =1.693(95%:1.028, 2.778)) and prolong standing in patient side (AOR =0.52(95%CI: 0.318, 0.87)) were significantly associated with lower Back pain. Conclusion & recommendation: The finding of this study showed that the overall prevalence of lower back pain was 65%. Sex, lift high loaded objects more than 20 kg on a daily basis, prolong standing in patient side were significantly associated lower back pain with a p-value of less than 0.05 and confidence interval of 95%.
