REASONS FOR WITHDRAWAL OF MEDICINE STUDENTS AMONG THE SAINT PAUL’S HOSPITAL MILLENIUM MEDICAL COLLEGE IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS

Abstract

Summary Background: Worldwide, Higher education had been given for long years. In Ethiopia also, Universities & colleges are being built right & left now a days. However, not few students are leaving the campus once and for all here in our country because of varied reasons. Objective: To assess the reasons for withdrawal of medicine students among the SPHMMC from 2005-2009 E.C. Methods and Materials: The study was conducted at SPHMMC, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from February 30 to March 30, 2018 G.C. Descriptive retrospective cross sectional study design was implemented to get 65 withdrawn medicine students format. The investigator administered structured checklist was used to collect the data from the registrar office. The collected data was cleaned & exported to SPSS Ver.20 for further analysis. Descriptive statistics was used for using frequency and counting method to analyze reasons & patterns of withdrawal. Finally the result is presented in text, table and will be communicated and presented to all concerned bodies through the different outlets available. Results: A total of 65 withdrawal format are reviewed. Of all 39 (60%) were male and 26 (40%) were female. The mean age of the victims was 19.3 years. The highest numbers of withdrawn students (61.5%) were aged between 17-19 years. The main reasons for withdrawal of students are dismissal, followed by inability to overcome academic overload & health problem. Conclusion and Recommendations: The reason for withdrawal attributed more to dismissal & inability to overcome academic overload as well as health problem of the student. For this reason, the college have to prepare additional tutor class for those with poor performance in the previous module. And students should have good student clinic to work for students health only. Key words: withdrawal, dismissal, formats
