RATE OF POST THYROIDECTOMY COMPLICATION AND DETERMINANTS IN SURGICAL PATIENTS IN SPHMMC

Abstract

Summary Background Thyroidectomy is a common surgical procedure that has several potential complications or squeal including temporary or permanent change in voice, temporary or permanently low calcium, need for lifelong thyroid hormone replacement, bleeding, infection and the remote possibility of airway obstruction due to bilateral vocal cord paralysis .complications are uncommon when procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon. Objective The main objective of this research is to identify the rate of post operative complication and determinants in patients who underwent thyroidectomy procedure in SPHMMC surgical department in the year 2017 (from January to December). Hence this study will be undertaken with the objectives of reporting the incidence and pattern of surgically treated goiters, pathologic findings, and type of operative management and complications of surgical treatment. Methodology A retrospective review of medical records of all patients admitted and operated for thyroid disorders in one year period (from January to December 2017) will be done. Rate and types of complications and determinants of outcome will be studied. P values of 0.05 will be used to test significance of associated factors. Expected outcome From the total number of 255 patients that will be studied in the research, the rate of thyroidectomy will be determined by age and sex with the type of operation undertaken. The complications consistent with associated procedure will be determined.
