Abstract
ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: Needle stick injuries (NSIs) have been recognized as one of the
occupational hazards among health care workers specially nurses and pose a significant risk for
transmission of blood borne pathogens. Preventing NSI is an essential part of any blood borne
pathogen prevention program in the work place.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and associated factors of
needle stick injuries among nurse professionals in Arada sub city governmental hospitals, Addis
Ababa, 2016.
METHOD: Institutional based analytic cross-sectional study was conductedon223 nurse
professionals in Arada sub city governmental hospitals, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Data about
socio demographic, working environment and nurse professionals’ behavioral factors was
collected through self-administered, pre-tested structured questionnaire. The collected data was
entered and analyzed using SPSS version 20.Descriptive statistics was made for most of the
variables and logistic regression was done to identify possible associated factors. Crude odds
ratios and adjusted odds ratio with 95 % CI was used. And in this statistical analysis, association
was determined, if P value is less than 0.05 and it was considered as statistically significant.
RESULT: Ninety four (44.8%) of respondents reported needle stick injuries during the last 12
months. Multiple logistic regression analysis of the factors showed that training AOR: 2.874,
95% CI: (1.403-5.889), substance use AOR: 2.82, 95%CI :( 1.334-5.998), sleeping problem
AOR: 0.209, 95% CI: (0.085-0.516) and stress AOR: 2.669, 95% CI: (1.309-5.442) are
associated with occurrence of NSIs.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION: This study revealed that one year prevalence
of needle stick and sharp injuries among nurses was high and it’s associated with training on
infection prevention, sleeping problem, level of job stress on nurse respondents and substance
use. Therefore, there should be well organized supervising body reporting system and regular
training.
