Abstract

Abstract Background: The precise magnitude of anemia among chronic disease patients is difficult to ascertain because many of the patients with DM and other chronic diseases are not screened and investigated sufficiently to establish the diagnosis of anemia. In Ethiopia, limited researches are done on anemia among diabetic patients. This study is aimed to determine the magnitude of anemia and associated factor among adult DM patients in selected governmental hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Method: Institutional based cross-sectional study analysis was conducted in simple randomly selected governmental hospitals in Addis Ababa with the determined sample size of 320. The data was entered in to epi data version 4.6 then cleaned and exported to Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. Descriptive statistics for categorical variables were presented in frequencies and percentages. Logistic regression was computed to assess factors associated to anemia in DM patients. The summary measures of estimated crude and adjusted odds Ratios with 95% confidence interval were presented and P-value <0.05 was used to declare statistical significance. Results: This study result revealed that the magnitude of anemia among adult DM patients in selected governmental hospitals of Addis Ababa is 24.9%. Educational status of elementary school (AOR=2.978 CI=1.231-7.202) was significantly associated factor for anemia among DM Patients in a selected governmental hospital in Addis Ababa. Conclusion and Recommendation: Anemia was a major health problem among DM patients in the study area. Therefore, routine screening of anemia for all DM patients aiding in early identification and improved management of diabetes will lead to improved quality of life in these patient populations. Therefore, governmental stakeholders should give special consideration to the development of anemia in chronic illness that has an overt negative consequence on the health of the population.
