dc.description.abstractAbstract Background: -. Traumatic brain injury is an expanding major public health problem and the leading cause of death of the young and productive part of the world’s population. Only few researches were done in this area in low-income countries who shares the large proportion of the worldwide fatalities occur. The intention of this study was to know the prevalence and the management outcome of traumatic brain injury in road traffic accident victims in a setting where most patients in low- and middle-income countries receive treatment, a referral hospital with general neurosurgical service like AaBET Hospital. The study aims to provide health planners working in similar set-ups with baseline information for further investigation and prevention programs intending to reduce the burden of head injury Objective: To assess the prevalence and management outcome of traumatic brain injury patients who sustained road traffic accident Method: A hospital based chart review study was implemented on Prevalence and management outcome of traumatic brain injury in patients who sustained road traffic accident at AaBET Hospital from September 1 up to December 30,2017GC. Data was collected using structured questionnaire. Descriptive analysis was done using SPSS version 21. Result: 33.3% of road traffic victims develop traumatic brain injury. The most affected age group is from 21-30 with –with male predominance. The average time for treatment is 10 hours .Pediatricians is the most affected victims with 48.9%. The most common presentation is loss of consciousness in 41% followed by change in mentation and vomiting. CT scan was done 69% of the victims and the most common finding is brain contusion. Based on GCS the severity of brain injury is mild (75%), moderate (19.6%) and severe (5.4%) and 38% sustained other site injuries. Conclusion and recommendation: brain injury is one of the commonest injuries caused by road traffic accident .Most of the victims were young males in their most productive prime of life ,the economic life wires of most homes in sub-Saharan Africa .Health policy maker should give attention in this area and further research should be done.
