Abstract
ABSTRACT
Introduction: Advanced cardiac Life Support provides a standardized approach to the
management of cardiac arrest, including manual defibrillation, advanced airway, drug therapy,
pre-arrest circumstances, and post-resuscitation. In/out of hospital Cardiac arrest is major public
health concern and cause mortality globally due to inadequate ACLS care. Therefore, assessing
the knowledge, practice and associated factors among General Practitioner and Nurses of 3
selected Hospital is important as it gives baseline information on quality of ACLS care.
Objectives: The aim of the study is to assess knowledge, practices and associated factors of
advanced cardiac life support among General Practitioner and Nurses in 3 selected primary
hospitals from March 15 to April 15 2023 G.C.
Methods: An Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted in 3 selected primary
hospitals from West shoa Oromia Region. Data were collected using self-administered
questionnaires. The tools reliability was mentioned by considering cronbach’s alpha>0.70. Data
were entered by Epi data version 4.6 and analyzed using STATA version 14. Bivariate and
multivariable logistic regression analysis was used. All explanatory variables with p-value of
<0.25 from bivariate logistic regression model were fitted in the multivariable logistic regression
to see the effect of each variable with the dependent variables. Crude and adjusted odd’s ratios at
95 % confidence interval were used to show the strength of association at p value <0.05.
Results: 147 general practitioners and nurses participated in the study with a response rate of
94.23%, and among the study participants, 39.5% (95% CI: 32.3-47.7) and 35.37% (95% CI:
28.68-43.8) had good knowledge and good practice towards ACLS, respectively. Sex,
Educational status, experience and availability of emergency equipment and medication, was
significantly associated with Knowledge of health profession. In addition, profession, assigned
place, exposure to cardiac case, training and experiences was significantly associated with health
worker practice on multivariable logistic regression (p<0.05).
Conclusion: In general, ACLS knowledge, practices were all low among study participants. As a
result, further training, regular rotation of assigned place, frequently involved in resuscitation
and advancement in education are required to achieve the desired result. Since district hospitals
are the first line for immediate resuscitation to save life, so it needs greater attention on this area
depend on the result.
