Abstract

Abstract Back ground: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways. Most asthma exacerbations can be prevented if management is comprehensive. Poorly managed asthma leads to emergency treatment and hospitalization. It imposes a large burden on individuals and health care systems so that periodic research on the prevalence and factors that lead patients to visit ER is mandatory for proper health care planning, management and prevention of the problem in order to reduce health care cost, morbidity and mortality thereby assuring productive citizens. Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the prevalence, risk factors, treatment options and outcomes of acute exacerbations of bronchial asthma. Methods: The study was cross sectional, retrospective document review. This study was carried out at AaBET/ SPHMMC Hospital Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from October, 2017 to March 2018 G.C. The Source population was all patients who visited EOPD of AaBET Hospital during study period. The Study population is all adult patients who present with acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma and visited adult emergency department. All adult patients who visited EOPD of AaBET and diagnosed as a case of bronchial asthma during Study period were selected. The sampling technique was done by purposive sampling technique. No need of sampling technique because all patients visiting adult emergency room and diagnosed as asthma during the study period as taken the study sample. The required data were obtained by preparing a structured check list table. The data were obtained from HMIS logbook of AaBET Hospital. Patients with the diagnosis of asthma were retrieved from HMIS log book, then the data were collected through gathering all medical records of patients with asthma who came in the study period. After the data was collected and the responses are coded, the data were entered into a computer and analyzed using SPSS. In the analysis process, frequency distribution of variables was worked out in order to describe them.
