Abstract
Summary
Background-high body mass index (BMI) which includes overweight and obesity is a risk factor
for diet-related non communicable diseases. These diseases are the fifth leading risks for global
deaths. Virtually, all age groups are affected from consequences of overweight and obesity. The
problem still needs further investigation to obtain base line data that enable to undertake
appropriate and effective measures that are directed towards improving BMI of high school
students.
Objective – To determine magnitude and predictors of high BMI in high school students in
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Method - A school based cross sectional study design was implemented and data was gathered
using pre designed questionnaire adopted from other similar studies. And the data was analyzed
using SPSS and the results were presented using graphs, tables and figures.
Results: Among 499 participants, the magnitudes of overweight and obesity were 11.3% and
1.6%, respectively, and the combined prevalence of overweight and obesity together was 13%.
Three-fourths of the respondents (71.5%) had healthy body mass index; however, 15.4% were
underweight. school type, having pocket money, not doing vigorous activity, frequency of doing
vigorous physical activity and having first degree relative who is overweight or obese were
statically significant predictors of overweight and obesity among high school students.
Conclusion and recommendation: The problems of overweight and obesity are taking place
while students are still under the risk of underweight. Several factors were correlated with
overweight and obesity. Therefore, interventions targeting physical activities, frequency of doing
physical activity and school environment are recommended.
